Scandisk

Home Up Defrag Scandisk Copy vs Move Backup Virus / Anti Virus Combating Viruses

SCANDISK
Like Defrag, Scandisk is an important and powerful tool to keep you computer running optimally.  It is also very quick and easy to use, so running it on a regular basis is a good thing to do.  SCANDISK can check and repair damage to the FAT (File Allocation Table), repair Directory structure and corrupted files.

To launch SCANDISK in Windows 98:

1.  Click the START button

2. Click RUN

3. Type SCANDISK

4.  This will bring up the SCANDISK window with C: as the default drive.
5.  Select STANDARD and AUTOMATICALLY FIX ERRORS.
6.  Click START.
Note:  If you have more than hard drive you can select and run SCANDISK on it after the C: drive is finished.

Note:  The two options are for a Standard or Thorough scan.  Standard checks files and folders for errors and will prompt you for repair if it finds any.  Or, you can check Automatically Fix Errors and SCANDISK will repair automatically anything that it finds.  Standard SCANDISK only takes seconds to run.  It is recommend to run a Standard SCANDISK at least once a week.  Thorough scan performs the same Standard scan plus scanning the disk surface for errors.  A Thorough Scandisk only needs to be run once in a while.  Be aware that a Thorough Scandisk takes a considerable amount of time to complete.

8.  When SCANDISK is finished it will display a status of the drive it just scanned.

NOTE:  One of the major causes of file corruption is from shutting down your computer improperly.  To shut down your computer properly in a Windows environment, make sure you click the START button, SHUT DOWN, SHUT DOWN.  When the computer displays the screen message IT IS NOW SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER, turn off the power.  In Windows OSR2 and Windows98 if the computer is shut off improperly and then restarted, Windows will run SCANDISK automatically before booting into Windows.

NOTE:  There is no Scandisk function within the Operating System of Windows 2000, XP or 2003.
